Valencia applies a holistic therapeutic perspective to understand and address trauma responses in young children and adults and to empower children and families to address everyday life situations. Through her work with children diagnosed with ASD and their families, Valencia adopts the strengths-based approach to encourage independence, confidence, improved social skills and to increase their window of tolerance towards more efficient emotional regulation.
As a mother to a blended family herself, Valencia understands the challenges that clients face in everyday interactions and relationships - including power imbalances, parenting, relationship breakdown, disappointment and in-effective communication. By encouraging clients to recognise unhelpful patterns of behaviour, to assume accountability and to participate in strategy building, Valencia aims to empower each client to realise that they possess the ability to action change within their lives.
In her practice, Valencia applies evidence-based, trauma-informed and person-centred therapeutic approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), EMDR Therapy and Harm Minimisation. For couples and families, she applies the renowned Gottman Couples Therapy method.
